    A Reasonably Spiritual Christmas?

With the holiday season coming up I thought I would share some more or less seasonal thoughts about what a Deist Christmas might be like. I long ago earned the seasonal nickname “Scrooge” for my refusal to join in Christmas celebrations. At that time I still considered myself a Christian but felt that Jesus would have been horrified at the hedonism and licentiousness associated with the cel ...

  • The Unreasonable Voice of Reason

There was a bit of a ruckus over on one of my favorite blog sites a couple of months back when biological anthropologist Barbara King took the world’s most famous atheist, Richard Dawkins, to task for urging his followers to “mock” and “ridicule” those who professed belief in the trans-substantiation of bread wafers in the Christian sacrament of the Eucharist. King’s co-blogger Adam F ...

As medicine advances, we will eventually have a cure for all diseases - including aging. If that day was today and you could opt for eternal, physical life on Earth would you do it? Or, are you willing to risk oblivion to see what comes next?

I do think that we should do things that will keep us alive for longer and ofcourse that we shouldn't do things that shorten our life span unless its for a true good cause.

However, I would not like to live forever on this Earth because I don't believe that this is where peace is tor those who choose peace. Eckhart Tolle I think believe that we are waking up out of what he calls metaphorically unconsciousness and into a non egoic/ resistant to what is mode. I disagree with him. I think that the world is and will be full of people who choose evil persistently and will maintain it until death.

Plus I believe its a natural process to die eventually, but I wouldn't mind living for a very, very long time.

Thanks

Damn... that is a tough one...
Physical body= Sex, drugs, music, et cetera.
Dying= Finally knowing what comes after.
Wow...

I wouldnt say a cure for all diseases is a forgone conclusion. In fact our medical advancements might end up exterminating us as a species. For sure humanity is at a precipice in many regards, health being right up there. We are breeding diseases at an absolutely un-paralleled rate in human history.. rather an un-comparable rate... and our greatest victories over disease have been thwarted in a blink of an eye.

For the human race to make a leap forward scientifically like the one we made in the modern age, I would say that our lifespans need to be dramatically increased first and diseases for the most part would need to be conquered.

I dont believe I would commit suicide if I was living a long time and didnt see any way for me to die in the forseeable future. Thats not to say I would keep myself alive at all costs, just to say I wouldnt actively seek to end my life if faced with this situation.

I would stay alive on earth forever if I could stay in a good physical condition. But I would not fear death as much after living for a long time, after experiencing everything that I wanted to.

I think being in good health is a key part of it. I think bio-technology will one day allow us to regrow missing limbs or cure diseases with a shot of engineered cells.
