    A Reasonably Spiritual Christmas?

With the holiday season coming up I thought I would share some more or less seasonal thoughts about what a Deist Christmas might be like. I long ago earned the seasonal nickname “Scrooge” for my refusal to join in Christmas celebrations. At that time I still considered myself a Christian but felt that Jesus would have been horrified at the hedonism and licentiousness associated with the cel ...

There was a bit of a ruckus over on one of my favorite blog sites a couple of months back when biological anthropologist Barbara King took the world’s most famous atheist, Richard Dawkins, to task for urging his followers to “mock” and “ridicule” those who professed belief in the trans-substantiation of bread wafers in the Christian sacrament of the Eucharist. King’s co-blogger Adam F ...

TOPIC: Do you believe in demons?

Based on my research into NDEs, it appears that life after life is the same for the evil and the good. Many have a life review and feel immense shame for the things they did during their life.

I've come to the same conclusion without the NDEs. And I further believe that the shame is derived from their inability to hide who they were in life, from anyone, especially themselves. And those that can't bear it will humanely chose their (our?) own oblivion. We will be our own judges.

I clearly agree with you, TPT. I am just curious how you arrived at that conclusion?

Going with the "we will be our own judges" theory, what if someone has an over functioning and zealous conscience? They treated other humans better than the majority of people throughout history but they have such a high expectation of their own behavior that they still judge themselves "unworthy." Would god step in to stop them before they demolecularized themselves?

I don't believe in demons either or in evil as some separate entity. I think evil is a word we use for something really bad, maybe almost unbelievably bad, but I still think it's a human invention. And as I said on another thread, I personally believe that what happens to one of us when we die happens to all of us when we die. I think we pay for the bad things we do in this life, even though granted it seems like some people get away with an awful lot and that doesn't seem fair. I think we go back to nature, and that's why I want to be buried naturally or cremated so I don't stay in some metal box that will take ages to disintegrate. I want to be making leaves and flowers :)

Thinking that God, and ostensibly those in an afterlife, would not want to spend eternity knowing of and hearing the eternal agonies of those in Hell. It's obviously just a vindictive ploy used by priests and kings to control people. And why not be humane, I didn't figure there was a divine need for retribution, or even judgement, just a way to allow them to put themselves out of their own misery.

I've come to think of the light they see in NDEs as the light of Truth, undeniable Truth, undeniable even for ourselves, leaving us no choice but to judge ourselves.

Just guessing  , but I imagine that light of Truth works both ways. Good question though, I hadn't considered the other side of the coin--and it makes me feel better because I'm all the time beating myself up for stuff I did back when, like even 7 and stuff, things that were stupid and inconsiderate, not immoral. I can forgive myself, but not forget, I guess for fear of repeating them.

Yes, evil is a human invention, it is immorality, putting our rights above others; and we're born knowing those rights inherently due to our self-awareness which forces us to put ourselves in the shoes of others. And I think fairness is a word that doesn't apply to this world except for the equality of rights for all. And Judgement, like I say, is facing what you did with your life with no lie to hide behind, even for ourselves. Could Hitler or Jeffery Dahmer stand themselves for all eternity. I don't think they'd be able to take if for a microsecond.

And as for our earthly remains, I think this universe/quantum computer records everything down to every quantum interaction. So even if we we're disintegrated by an atom bomb, we can still "run" the recording including every thought. So I don't think a return to nature matters. After all, even nature (the universe) is going to die, but that doesn't mean our souls do, or God (if He exists) does.

hmmmm......okay. well it matters to me and I don't believe in a separate individual soul that lives on but instead believe it becomes part of the whole (or more accurately changes form within the whole). Again, it matters to me. Just sayin'.
